The tragic near-drowning incident involving Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown’s daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown, has sparked many questions pertaining to brain injuries. First let me express how deeply saddened I am by this unfortunate incident, and my heart and prayers go out to her family.
As details from what may have transpired on Saturday -- when 21-year-old Bobbi Kristina was found unresponsive, face down in a bathtub -- continue to emerge, many of you have written to me asking about brain injuries. While we don’t have the full details on exactly what happened to Bobbi Kristina, we do know CPR was administered and that she remains in a hospital “fighting for her life.” A source close to the situation told Fox411 that doctors have expressed that there is little they can do to help her.
"It's now a matter of when the family wants to let go and accept that she's pretty much not going to make it," the source told Fox411. "They've left it up to the family as to how long they want to keep her alive."
From a medical standpoint, there are some factors which must be considered in surmising what can occur in the brain during a near-drowning experience. First, we must consider how long the patient was without oxygen. Typically, if a patient has not received good oxygenation for greater than six minutes, the brain can suffer irreversible damage.
What I mean by irreversible damage is that brain function can either be completely or partially disabled. When the entire brain is completely disabled, we typically refer to that as brain death – which occurs when the upper brain areas and brain stem are no longer functioning. When the brain becomes partly disabled, the patient may have some structures of the brain working, like the brain stem, but not all. We typically refer to this state as a coma.
In order to differentiate between the two, physicians will conduct a full examination of the patient, which will includes checking vital signs, making note of underlying medical conditions, and considering how the brain failed to get enough oxygen, for instance was it due to a drowning, stroke, etc. The physician will then use several tests to determine the extent of brain function.
These tests typically include a full neurological examination, looking at the activity of the pupils, gag reflex, and possibly doing an apnea test – disconnecting the patient from the ventilator to see if the patient can spontaneously breathe on his or her own for several minutes. The physician will also do an electroencephalogram (EEG) test, to look for electrical activity in the brain, and conduct brain vascular imaging.
At the conclusion of the analysis, doctors will determine whether there has been partial or complete brain death. Many patients who have partial brain injury and are in a coma can theoretically progress to a more stable condition and partially recover. However, complete brain death tragically means death of the being.
Many people wonder why someone who has had a brain injury after they have been revived through CPR, can recover their heart function. While the heart can autonomically function as long as it is receiving oxygen, it is ultimately the brain which controls all. The brain dictates our breathing, neurological support and even our hormonal support, which ultimately regulates some of the major organs in our body including our kidneys. Without brain function, our bodies become quite vulnerable.
While we don’t have the details surrounding the medical condition of Bobbi Kristina, we do know how she was found, and the dangers of injuring the brain. I wish her peace in her future, and continue to pray for her health.
http://www.foxnews.com/health/2015/02/0 ... -drowning/On Thursday, Feb. 5, her cousin Jerod Brown updated concerned well-wishers on her condition, writing on Facebook, "Though it seems the odds are against her, though doctors don't see any hope for change, though we might want to play detective and find out how she got there, though it looks impossible for her to stand again STILL PRAY FOR BK."

There is an active criminal investigation underway in Georgia in the Bobbi Kristina case ... it centers on possible foul play and the target is her boyfriend.
Law enforcement sources tell us ... Bobbi Kristina had certain injuries that have piqued their interest. We do not know the nature of the injuries. Multiple sources tell TMZ there is a history of violence between Bobbi Kristina and boyfriend Nick Gordon.
We're told police are looking into a possible altercation more than an hour before Bobbi Kristina was found submerged in a bathtub.
We're told Max Lomas -- the friend who discovered Bobbi Kristina in the tub -- arrived at around 9 AM last Saturday. He says he hung out with Nick but did not see Bobbi Kristina. He was told she was in the bedroom. Nick wandered away and Max says he didn't pay attention to his whereabouts.
The cable guy showed sometime after 10 AM and Max says he let him in -- Nick was nowhere to be seen. The cable guy said he needed access to the bedroom so Max let him in and discovered Bobbi Kristina in the tub. He screamed for Nick, who ran in and administered CPR.
We're told Max claims Nick allegedly cleaned up the home and removed blood stains.
Cops interviewed both Max and Nick and they want to debrief Max again, but our law enforcement sources say Max's lawyer insisted on immunity before he spoke again. We're told as of Friday morning Max hadn't gotten immunity or talked to cops.
Our sources say Nick Gordon has also lawyered up. We could not reach Nick for comment.
http://www.tmz.com/2015/02/06/bobbi-kri ... stigation/Nick Gordon to appear in court on reckless driving charges amid claims he is being investigated for injuries Bobbi Kristina Brown sustained before she was found in tub
Bobbi Kristina Brown's controversial partner Nick Gordon has been summoned to appear in court on Monday to answer charges of reckless driving.
A warrant for his immediate arrest will be issued if he does not turn up at Fulton County State Court in Atlanta at 9am.
The court date comes as Gordon's girlfriend Bobbi Kristina remains on life support in hospital after being found lifeless in a bath tub.
And reports suggest Gordon will be the focus of a police investigation into how the incident had surfaced amid allegations of foul play.
Vigil: Gordon was pictured outside the North Fulton Hospital, where Bobbi Kristina was first taken, on Sunday
Gordon, 25, was caught driving at over twice the speed limit along a suburban road in November 2012.
Gordon was clocked driving his Chevrolet Camaro SS sports car at 82 miles an hour in a 35 miles an hour zone near to his home in Alpharetta, Georgia, at 7.06pm on 28 November 2012.
But when he was stopped he put Whitney Houston music on his car stereo as the police officer approached.
The singer took Gordon under her wing when he was 12 years old.
Whitney Houston raised the boy as her own son at her home outside Atlanta but never legally adopted him.
She was found dead in the bath tub of her room at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in February 2012.
Bobbi Kristina was found in eerily similar circumstances on Saturday morning.

A court date was originally set for February 2013 when he was first taken to Alpharetta jail, but the case was adjourned.
Now he must appear at the Fulton County State Court in Atlanta on Monday morning to answer the charges.
A police source told DailyMail.com: ‘Gordon was clocked doing over 80 along North Point Parkway.
‘This is a suburban area he was lucky he didn’t kill anyone.
‘And when he was stopped he slipped this Whitney Houston CD into the player like it was some kind of joke.’
The police report states: ‘On 11-28-12, I was conducting speed enforcement on North Point Parkway northbound at Regal Cinema.
‘I observed a vehicle travelling southbound at an extremely high speed.
‘I activated my laser speed detection device and clocked the vehicle at 82 mph in a posted 35 mph zone.
‘I conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle and made contact with the driver, Nicholas Gordon.
‘He was immediately arrested for reckless driving.'

Violent History With Nick Gordon Triggered By Jealousy
Bobbie Kristina and Nick Gordon's violent relationship was well known among their friends ... and sources tell us it was fueled by jealousy -- but not the kind you'd expect.
Sources close to the couple tell us ... their spats, which sometimes resulted in domestic violence, were almost always triggered by Nick's jealousy over Bobbi Kristina's fame. He felt he was also Whitney Houston's child since he grew up with her and could not understand why people focused on Bobbi.
One recent example ... they were trying to get their own TV show but when Nick wasn't offered the same deal as Bobbi Kristina they turned it down.
Sources close to the couple tell us Bobbi Kristina's injuries, which triggered an ongoing criminal investigation with Gordon as the target, don't surprise their friends because they've known the relationship sometimes got violent.
We made multiple attempts to reach Nick. So far, no word back.
http://www.tmz.com/2015/02/09/bobbi-kri ... lity-show/HE'S GOING TO KILL HER! Bobbi Kristina and Nick Gordon BLIND ITEM?!
For the past few months things have been getting worse. What was always a volatile relationship has turned more violent than volatile. Family members have tried to help this C list reality star offspring of this former A+ list entertainer(singer). From people I have spoken to who have been inside the home of our C lister, things are bad. There are drugs everywhere. There is cash everywhere. It is like watching Scarface.
The significant other of our C lister thinks he is the next Scarface. The thing is he sucks at business. He just uses the money of our C lister to make it seem like he is making millions of dollars. Instead he is spending every cent she gets in the second it comes in and has made her sign all types of documents which have basically cost her most of her future income for the next few years.
When he doesn't keep her drugged up he beats her. He has all kinds of recordings of her doing anything he can think of just to keep her in line. He says he will release it all if she tries to leave him. She is scared of him and loves him at the same time. When he is wasted the beatings can be rough and there have been shots fired more than once. Everyone knows he is going to end up killing her one night. She will try and leave and he won't like that and will shoot her and kill her. The family hopes she can escape, but she has no place to go that she would accept help from.

Will Bobbi Kristina's Family Let Her Die on Anniversary of Whitney Houston's Death? There are conflicting reports about whether Bobbi Kristina's family plans to take her off life support on the anniversary of her mother Whitney Houston's death.
A source tells "Extra" that the family has NOT agreed on a date to remove Bobbi Kristina from life support.
The denial comes after the New York Post released a story saying Bobbi Kristina Brown’s family planned to take the 21-year-old off life support on Feb. 11, the three-year anniversary of Houston’s death.
Page Six reported that Whitney’s mom, Cissy Houston, suggested the idea to relatives over the weekend, and Bobby Brown’s family agreed.
A public vigil for Bobbi Kristina was held in Riverside, GA on Monday. The gathering included about 500 people singing gospel songs, listening to scripture and praying for Bobbi’s health.
Meanwhile, authorities are still investigating events leading up to her drowning, including suspicious bruises on her body. She was found face down and unconscious in a bathtub at her Roswell, GA home on Jan. 31.
A source told the Daily Mail that Nick Gordon is blaming the bruises on CPR, however, WSB-TV is reporting that there were also bruises on her face and mouth.
